Sustainability

How we are helping to make the world a bit greener

At Nuttycombe Brewery, our commitment to sustainability and green practices is making significant progress. We are actively implementing various initiatives to enhance our environmental credentials. Here are some notable measures we have taken:

Local Supplier Sourcing

We prioritise sourcing our suppliers as close to the brewery as possible. This approach helps reduce transportation distances, minimising our carbon footprint and supporting local businesses.

Plastic-Free Packaging

We carefully select suppliers who provide packaging that is free from plastic materials. By opting for eco-friendly alternatives, we contribute to reducing plastic waste and its detrimental impact on the environment.

General Waste

We use General Western Recycling to ensure that all our non-recyclable waste is managed in the most sustainable manner possible. With our waste bin collections, none of the general waste ends up in a landfill as General Western Recycling prioritise environmentally friendly practices and employs innovative methods to handle and dispose of non-recyclable waste responsibly.

Water Conservation

We recycle the water used in our cleaning systems, significantly reducing the amount of wastewater discharged into public drains. We aim to utilise “grey water” for purposes such as flushing toilets and washing vehicles, effectively saving water.

Cask Recycling

We take pride in recycling all our casks, some of which date back to the 1970s. By reusing these casks, we extend their lifespan and minimise waste.

Yeast and Biomass Conversion

Excess yeast from the brewing process is collected by a local farmer and converted into fuel using biomass converters. This innovative collaboration allows us to repurpose yeast that is not required or produced during production.

Efficient Utilisation of Byproducts

The remaining from the brewing process is utilised as fertiliser, also benefiting the local farmer. Spent hops are collected and used for mulching in gardens. Spent grain, known as mash, is collected and used as cattle feed (Nuttycombe keep a sample of the mash for traceability for the BFBI). These practices ensure that byproducts are repurposed rather than wasted.

Sustainable Pallet and Packaging Solutions

The broken pallets are collected and converted into heating sources, reducing waste and maximising their utility. Local companies use our hop boxes for their small packages. Malt sacks are collected and repurposed for bagging manure or green waste for gardens.

By implementing these measures, we actively contribute to sustainability, reduce waste, and support local initiatives. Nuttycombe Brewery is committed to continually seeking new ways to improve our green practices and pave the way for a more environmentally conscious brewing industry.

Our Green Vision

At Nuttycombe Brewery, we strive to use green energy, such as biogas instead of LPG gas and minimize chemical usage. Our goal is to become fully eco-friendly by 2030.
